One on One Yoga for Children with Additional Needs

“As childrens yoga teacher and mother of a child with CHD (Congenital Heart Defect) I experience every day how yoga empowers children with and without additional needs.”

Yoga is a practice that opens doors for children with additional needs. It parallels and supports other therapeutic modalities in addressing challenges with attention, self-regulation, speech and language, learning, and high and low muscle tone.”

Meeting children where they are at, trusting that all children are capable of learning to find a place of calm within themselves, providing a safe and loving space and giving them support that meets their individual needs through practicing yoga is central to my approach in sharing yoga with children with additional needs.

The use of song and sound, breathing techniques, body awareness through tapping, massage and therapeutic yoga poses as well as self regulation and relaxation techniques are methods that I apply in therapeutic yoga for children.

Through a regular yoga practice we build energy, our muscles get stronger, we build up our immune system, we calm our central nervous system and our breath. We get more flexible, we are able to concentrate better, sleep better, our brain works better and we are more self confident.
Yoga helps us to bring balance to our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

My approach is to get to know your child first, their personality, their likes and dislikes, their preferences, their talents, their strengths, without focussing too much on the diagnosis.
The diagnosis is just a label. It does not define what your child is capable of achieving or how they learn best. From learning about your child in our first session together, I will then develop a practice plan how yoga can best benefit and support your child in further sessions.

“With Yoga you are speaking to a child’s soul, so whatever their mental or physical capacity or incapacity they can still benefit.”
Jo Manuel, Founder and Executive Director of The Special Yoga Centre,

Benefits of therapeutic Yoga for Children

  • Strengthen their core musculature: improving balance and endurance and allowing for deeper respiration.
  • Balance their nervous system: bringing them out of fight or flight and into a place of relaxation.
  • Support sensory processing: poses offer proprioceptive, vestibular and tactile input and aide in the development of gross motor skills.
  • Enhance self-regulation: offers them the ability to control energy and activity level.
  • Support sequencing and motor planning skills: they master directions for moving in and out of poses and memorize pose sequences. What they begin on the mat then moves into the rest of their life.
  • Enhance speech and language abilities: yoga can release anxiety and tension helping to coordinate breathing and speech
  • Promote over all physical fitness: yoga promotes strength, flexibility and balance.

Yoga for concentration:
Children with attention deficit disorder, ADHD and other learning disabilities can also benefit from the improved concentration that regularly participating in yoga can bring.

Yoga Promotes Body Awareness
For children with disorders that affect their physical growth, yoga can help to promote body awareness. For many children, this can be a difficult issue, and more traditional athletic activities may be unsafe. Instead, low-impact exercises like yoga are preferred.

  • Practicing Yoga helps kids to become aware of thought patterns and stress triggers and so it allows children to begin to identify, manage and prevent stress on their owner

What To Expect In A ONE-ON-ONE Session

The first session is to get to know your child and yourself. It includes a conversation with you, the parents, after which you decide if a course block would be of value for your child. The offer consists of a block of 4 or 6 sessions after the get to know eachother session.
During the first session I will use different yoga practices specific to supporting your child and we will see how well we work together. By learning how your child responds to different breathing techniques, yoga asanas, self regulation and relaxation techniques I will create a practice plan for your child including weekly homepractices. Depending on your child’s age & personality I like to keep sessions playful and fun, as I believe children learn best and most stress free by giving them a playful and loving experience. This is how I build trust and security in the one to one sessions, so that the child feels safe and can intergrate the practices best.

One To One Sound Massage Session

Thoughts come to rest, tensions are relieved gently. In combination with an attentive, appreciative and facing attitude of the sound massage practitioner, regeneration at all levels is possible.

Of course, within the framework of sound massage for relaxation it is also possible to individually address certain desires or needs. This may be e.g. a special relaxation offer for the back or also mental support (e.g. for exam preparation).

Sound massage is primarily a holistic relaxation method. sound massage means that certain singing bowls are positioned on and/or around the dressed body and gently struck using different felt mallets. This creates a sound space that really embraces the client. The harmonic sounds calm the mind, the smooth sound vibrations gently stimulate the body – immediately providing for pleasant relaxation.

Vibrations of a singing bowl spread as sound, on one hand audible via the ears, on the other perceptible via the body. Maybe you have stood already in front of large loudspeakers (e.g. in a discotheque), where you probably clearly recognized the sound pressure. Accordingly, a singing bowl does not necessarily need to stay on the body for its vibrations to take effect. It is also possible to strike the singing bowl in the surrounding area. As you may have experienced yourself at the beginning today during the short sound warm-up, their vibrations even reach us in sound meditations or at concerts. Interestingly,
hearing and feeling belong to the senses prenatally fully matured. Already as an unborn baby we collect first experience about ourselves and our environment via hearing and feeling. It is also exciting that the monotonous, uniform sound structure of singing bowl sounds is similar to the sounds heard by an unborn in the womb – the heartbeat of the mother, roaring of her blood, her digestion… Maybe this explains why sounds appear intimate to many people from the very beginning and people report that during sound massage (and even afterwards) they noticed feelings of trust, confidence and faith.
